About the film
Since its stunning entry at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section, and subsequently its coronation at the Golden Globes and Oscars for the best animated feature in 2024, the popularity of FLOW seems to grow by the day. Audiences around the world are discovering a film that is being celebrated as a breakthrough in contemporary computer animation, due to its bold use of open-sourced software.to tell an immortal, yet so relevant story of humanity’s and nature’s under catastrophic challenges.
Director Gints Zilbalodis, with his big eyed black cat FLOW has created a unique, innovative animated adventure on a story of life survival in the midst of a catastrophic ecological disaster.
The cautionary tale, told with practically no dialogue, follows the (mis)adventures of the resilient feline who finds himself on a Noah’s Ark boat in company of several unlikely other creatures as they must band together to fray their ways to dryer lands, as their natural environment is now inhabitable due to most likely human made apocalyptic deluge like floods.
And as we know, cats and water…..

Why my Coup de Coeur
Inspired by the great late Jacques Tati, Zilbalodis’ 5 years in the making masterpiece is first of all a pure delight for the eyes with his use of brash, bold colours and simple, minimalist narrative. With his deft use of the real and the mythical figures in his characterization of this council of species who have to learn to create bonds to overcome, together, the perils of life and nature in a constant and accelerated state of change..
His FLOW feels authentic, as it navigates, quite literally, through the film’s thematics of survival, of friendship, the urgency of community bonding and the glorious, yet treacherous beauty of life and the inexplicable ways of nature. The film rises above the simple genre categories to be at once a children’s delight while exploring more mature themes and concerns..
A pure meditation on life and our world eco-system, FLOW gently proposes to the viewer a unique visual and philosophical cinematic experience on the passage of time, of the urgency of the moment and the need for an urgent, renewed sense of community that instills to the public with a liberating and much needed face to face with one’s own humility.
