A beautifully shot but incredibly taught and tense film noir thriller that traps the audience in a claustrophobic choreography. Sociopath Emmett Myers coerces his victims like a maniacal gun-weilding shepherd, on the road and through the desert, technically out-numbered but careful to not be out-gunned. He always keps one eye on them, even as he sleeps! Can these two unfortunate friends find a moment to outwit their captor ?

Beyond its obvious cultural significance as the only classic film noir directed by a woman (actress Ida Lupino), THE HITCH-HIKER is perhaps better remembered as simply one of the most nightmarish motion pictures of the 1950s. Inspired by the true-life murder spree of Billy Cook, THE HITCH-HIKER is the tension-laden saga of two men on a camping trip (Edmond O’Brien and Frank Lovejoy) who are held captive by a homicidal drifter (William Talman). He forces them, at gunpoint, to embark on a grim joyride across the Mexican desert.

Renegade filmmaking at its finest, THE HITCH-HIKER was independently produced, which allowed Lupino and ex-husband/producer Collier Young to work from a treatment by blacklisted writer Daniel Mainwaring, and tackle an incident that was too brutal for the major studios to even consider.

The film will be introduced by Chris Andrich, a graduate of Nova Scotia College of Art and Design with an encyclopedic knowledge of cinema, and a regular volunteer at film festivals and repertory cinemas.

Un thriller noir magnifiquement filmé, mais incroyablement tendu et intense, qui plonge le spectateur dans une chorégraphie oppressante. Le sociopathe Emmett Myers malmène ses victimes tel un berger maniaque armé d’un pistolet, sur la route et à travers le désert, techniquement en infériorité numérique mais veillant à ne pas être surpassé en puissance de feu. Il ne les quitte jamais des yeux, même lorsqu’il dort ! Ces deux malheureux amis parviendront-ils à trouver un moment pour déjouer leur ravisseur ?

Au-delà de son importance culturelle évidente en tant que seul film noir classique réalisé par une femme (l’actrice Ida Lupino), The Hitch-Hiker est peut-être davantage resté dans les mémoires comme l’un des films les plus cauchemardesques des années 1950. Inspiré de la véritable série de meurtres commis par Billy Cook, THE HITCH-HIKER est l’histoire pleine de suspense de deux hommes en excursion (Edmond O’Brien et Frank Lovejoy) qui sont retenus captifs par un vagabond meurtrier (William Talman). Il les oblige, sous la menace d’une arme, à se lancer dans une sinistre virée à travers le désert mexicain.

Véritable chef-d’œuvre du cinéma rebelle, THE HITCH-HIKER a été produit de manière indépendante, ce qui a permis à Lupino et à son ex-mari et producteur Collier Young de s’inspirer d’un synopsis rédigé par le scénariste Daniel Mainwaring, inscrit sur la liste noire, et d’aborder un sujet trop brutal pour que les grands studios n’osent même pas l’envisager.

Le film sera présenté par Chris Andrich (@edward_anch ), diplômé du Nova Scotia College of Art and Design et doté d’une connaissance encyclopédique du cinéma. Il est bénévole régulier dans les festivals de cinéma et les cinémas de répertoire.
