Montreal artist Sharlene Bamboat’s Video Home System traces the convergence of popular culture and politics in Pakistan during the 1980s and 1990s. Meanwhile Ross Sutherland’s Stand By for Tape Back-up is a profound and funny film about “memory, death and re-runs sparked from a lost vhs”.

Sharlene Bamboat is a Tiohtià:ke/Montreal-based artist working primarily in non-fiction moving image. Her work is distributed by VTape, Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre, and Vidéographe.

Ross Sutherland is a writer and poet, and creator of the award-winning experimental fiction podcast Imaginary Advice.

Video Home System:

Video Home System traces the convergnence of popular culture and politics in Pakistan during the 1980s and 1990s. This video showcases the connections between pop culture and nationalism, and how bootleg economies kept the cinema industry alive during periods of censorship.

What if you discovered an old vhs belonging to your grandfather, where he taped all the films and tv programmes that you enjoyed together? The same grandfather who took you to see Ghostbusters way too young. Ross Sutherland rewinds his memories through movies, adverts and Fresh Prince of Bel Air, with a syncronized looping poetic narrration that attempts to find meaning from absurdity.

L’œuvre Video Home System de l’artiste montréalaise Sharlene Bamboat retrace la convergence entre la culture populaire et la politique au Pakistan dans les années 1980 et 1990. Quant à Stand By for Tape Back-up de Ross Sutherland, il s’agit d’un film profond et drôle sur « la mémoire, la mort et les rediffusions suscitées par une cassette VHS perdue ».

Sharlene Bamboat est une artiste basée à Tiohtià:ke/Montréal qui travaille principalement dans le domaine de l’image animée non fictionnelle. Ses œuvres sont distribuées par VTape, le Centre de distribution des cinéastes canadiens et Vidéographe.
